Waterproof vs Water-Resistant Fabric: What’s the Difference?

When choosing outdoor fabrics for furniture, covers, or marine use, you’ll often see the terms waterproof and water-resistant. While they may sound similar, they actually perform quite differently. Understanding the difference can help you choose the right fabric for your needs.

What Is Water-Resistant Fabric?

Water-resistant fabric is designed to repel water to some extent, but it is not completely impermeable. These fabrics typically have a special coating or tightly woven fibres that cause water to bead on the surface rather than immediately soaking in.

Water-resistant materials work well for light rain, moisture, or occasional splashes. They are commonly used for outdoor cushions, squabs, bean bags, and furniture covers where the fabric may get wet but is not exposed to heavy or prolonged rainfall.

One advantage of water-resistant fabrics is that they are often more breathable, comfortable, and flexible than fully waterproof materials.

Water-resistant fabrics we use/sell are Planosol, Dickson, and Sunbrella – these are the ones mainly used for our outdoor cushions, squabs, and bean bags. Some other water-resistant fabrics are Seawise, Commander, and Vinyls.

What Is Waterproof Fabric?

Waterproof fabric provides a much higher level of protection. It is designed to completely block water from passing through the material, even during heavy rain or extended exposure.

This is usually achieved through special membranes, laminates, or heavy coatings that create a barrier against moisture. Waterproof fabrics are commonly used for applications such as boat covers, protective tarps, and outdoor covers for furniture, barbeques, etc.

The main waterproof fabrics that we use/sell are Nautex, Genlon, Toptarp, Ripstop, Cortex/PVC, Stamoid, and Endeavour.
